What
are the Jewish holy writings (the Torah)?
The
Torah is the sacred literature containing the body of
Jewish law and wisdom. Jews ascribe to two types of Torah,
the first being Written Torah, which generally refers
to the Five Books of Moses, and the second being Oral
Torah, comprised of the Talmud and its commentaries. The
Talmud is the legal and commentative work of the Pharisaic
(early CE-era) rabbis, who set up a mode of worship and
a life of discipline practiced by Jews to this very day.
