Hello, I stumbled upon this site by chance. I've began my process of conversion when I was 17. I've been trying to get myself back into studying after a year-long hiatus. There have been two new factors in the local community that have made it increasingly difficult for me, one being the fact that the Rabbi I began studying under retired and was replaced by a younger rabbi, the other factor being that the synagogue that I went to has moved from a more accessible neighborhood near downtown to a remote area in the suburbs, which is a good twenty minute drive from my house. There has been an increase in attendance at this new synagogue, and now I feel less than comfortable being surrounded by so many people.

This new rabbi - is he tough? does he do conversions?

the synagogue - if there are a lot more people, they're new and need friends just like you. it's a good thing.

I do some tutoring from time to time. could I help you? what kind of stuff are you studying right now.

I haven't really had a chance to talk with the rabbi. I've been studying independently for the past while, I haven't had a formal program of study since the old rabbi retired.

you don't need a formal study, but classes in hebrew are good. the rest you will need a rabbi, some friends (preferrably a family with children) and get to know your jewish bookstore

unfortunatly the only book I have is a siddur that was given to me by the old rabbi. Due to my present financial situation simply going out and buying books about Judaism is not exactly an option for me, but I do go to the library on a frequent basis. I also go on the internet whenever I can. Do you have any books or other websites to recommend?

yep I sure do. I'll get back to you in a few hours. my day is just starting out.

here, go download a free bible.

http://www.shamash.org/tanach/text.html

read this weeks portion (it's the first few chapters of leviticus)

and then go here

http://www.tanach.org/

this stuff is advanced. don't worry if you don't get it all

a few basic books which you can find at the library:

To Be A Jew.
To Pray as a Jew.
A Chumash with Rashi translated
The Kosher kitchen (there's actually a couple books with this title both pretty good)
a book on shabbot.

start there.

and get yourself a free passover hagaddah at the supermarket.
see if you can get to a seder this year.

If you tell me what area you are in I could try and find one. I have some connections around the country.
