Hi, I wondered if anybody has had experience of convertees from UK / Israel coming to USA. My wife is a convert by the Reform in the UK and the Tel Aviv beth din in Israel.. I should think she should be acceptable by the conservatives in the US... does anybody know?!! thanks

Falcon,
While rabbis are independent authorities and thus it is impossible to determine how each one may react (and I speak as one), by in large rabbis from the US will accept conversions by rabbis from the UK. However, the movements don't match exactly and therefore, Conservative rabbis in the US will probably want several things--though most will just be accepting of the conversion on face value--to make sure that there was a bet din (of three rabbis) and that mikvah was included.

Dear JOI, thank you for your quick response and I am glad I found you! Don't conservative rabbis have their own beth din? Are you saying it depends on the rabbi of the shul we apply for membership? Given that my wife has the highest of all conversions (from Israel Beth Din -not the reform but their standard/orthhodox) and we have a religious life, there should be no problem convincing a rabbi but we wondered if there was a bet din of authority for the conservatives........ thanks again

We are glad you found us too and we want to be of continuous help. There is no national Conservative Bet Din, only a Law Committee. Each community makes up its own Bet Din and might be made of just conservative rabbis or a mix (depending on the size of the community). It is indeed highly unlikely that someone would challenge an Orthodox Bet Din in Israel. (I only point out the possibility and the parameters. We feel like we have the responsibility to guide folks with all of what we know.) And best of luck.

Thanks again. You are quite right! Some do challenge even Israel. For instance the United Synogogue London Beth Din which represents about 50% of the UK and the Commonwealth jews does not accept any conversion in Israel only for political reasons and because they want to keep everything under their own control in the UK. Ironically the Federation of Bet Dins do accept them and so do all other movements!
Anyway, it sounds like we have to find a nice congregation with an even nicer rabbi! This we had to do anyway but changes priorities for us somewhat because we wanted to sort out the children's schooling well in advance of everything else because the schools registration for the next academic year is now in the process. If anybody knows of a nice congregation and a nicer rabbi in West LA /Santa Monica please let us know!!!
