| Hi There, My husband and I are expecting our first child, and wondering if there is an alternative to circumcision to form the convenant that is made by an actual circumcision. We are oppossed to the procedure due to the medical findings of late. Thanks

No there isn't. Those findings are highly suspicious, BTW. The medical benefits are more than proven, anyway.

| I am a pediatrician and agree with EBP2 that there is NO medical evidence to back up the new wishy-washy Academy of Pediatrics recommendations (they appear to be based more on politics than medical evidence). There is no doubt that circumcised boys/men get less urinary infections, venereal diseases, and penile cancer, and are less likely to to transimit papillomavirus (which causes cervical cancer) to women. I would add, however, that a drop of wine aint anesthesia! These babies DEFINITELY feel pain, and I would not let a mohel or a doctor perform a crcumcision without local anesthesia. I know some mohelim now do it that way.

| Alf, Alf, Alf, The "studies" have been disproved and are highly suspect, you know that. There is no signifcant difference in genital cancer and certainly no difference in transmittal of HPV between circ'd and non-circ'd males. There is no MEDICAL reason to routinely circumcise a newborn male. There are religious reasons and they have no basis in logic. God said "do this", and Jews do it. Some sort of Covenant with Abraham.

Sarah, Im not going to start a debate of the medical literature here, but YOU must know YOU are wrong. Check all the sources again---most of the documents going against circumcision are just invented guidlines based on no study, many of which have been pushed by agendized groups like INTACT.

| Thanks for the feedback, I have heard both sides of the argument and researched them on the internet. We thought that the lastest info from the AOP would be the most reliable. Thanks for your honesty about the anesthesia. What sort of politics are you referring to Alf? Are the politics cost related? I have also heard of some families choosing to have a drop of blood shed from the foreskin of the baby as a symbolic gesture. Is this becoming more common?

| drop of blood is not a circumcision. 95% of Jews will not accept this. I realize you might be squeamish. Completely understandable, but you'll be doing MUCH more damage by not doing it. Alf is saying a sad truth, even in pure science, there are petty battles, politics and money to be fought over. Every few years some guy decides he wants to be cutting edge and refute some established theory. It's like that idiot English professor who just decided that the Great Gatsby was black. publicity. many mohels apply anesthisia if asked.

| Where are these 'facts' saying circ'd men are healthier? Where are the 'facts' saying it is better and NECESSARY? If you choose to circ a baby for religious reasons or for aesthetic reasons, do so. Don't try to say that in the year 2000 that you are circ'ing your child for health reasons, it would be a lie. Most babies today are circ'd because Dad is and the majority of Americans are used to seeing circ'd penises. This doesn't necessarily make circ'ing your child evil, it simply means you are performing an elective procedure on your child (like piercing ears). I benefit financially when a woman decides to circ her son and it does no harm, so I enjoy the procedure (fast and easy). However, I do not let my patients go to the labor room believing circumcision is anything but an elective procedure. If you are pressured into circ'ing your child by someone telling you he will be healthier and this is medically necessary, find an up-to-date pediatrician because you are being mislead.

Clearly Sarah, you can't say that with such certainty. There's way too much evidence the other way.

| EBP2 is right, but this is a dumb discussion to have on an intermarriage bulletin board (maybe I started it, I dont remember, sorry). Sarah, if you want me to link you to reputable sources on this, fine, I will, but lets stop debating medicine here. ...and Im not outdated.
